Reviews Private Lesson Reviews “I feel like we hit the jackpot with Zoe! My kids (6 and 9 years old) have been taking music and piano lessons with her for the past 2 years, and they have learned so much. Zoe is always well-prepared for the lessons - it’s obvious that she loves teaching and puts a lot of thought and creativity into her planning. We especially love that she incorporates multi-sensory activities to engage and teach students, so lessons are never boring but instead jam-packed with so much quality instruction that also facilitates development in other areas. Beyond that, she does a great job interacting with young kids, as well as communicating with parents. I highly recommend her for anyone who is looking for a talented music teacher who goes above and beyond." Becky E (parent of two piano students) We enjoyed the Music Exploration Camp with Ms. Zoe. She has a way of showing how making music can come to life and teach you so many things you never knew about music. We are definitely looking forward to more classes with her! My goal is the teach the student to love playing the piano and to love music. We do this through movement, games, listening, playing, creating, and so much more. I do a lot off of the piano bench to keep younger students engaged and focused! Look at the music lesson info for students who may not be quite ready for piano lessons or who are pretty young. Voice Lessons : Ages 5+ (younger students may do better with music lessons first) Voice lessons are great for anyone of any age! For younger students are relaxed and fun! They provide a way to help students learn basic voice techniques but still make it easy on them so they don't hurt their growing vocal chords. Older students will get more training as their vocal chords are more developed. All students will fall in love with singing and learn how to sing in a way that's comfortable for them! Ukulele Lessons : Age 7+ (this is flexible; students under age 7 may do music lessons first) Ukulele lessons can be a great choice for students who may not have space to play a bigger instrument/not interested in other instruments but also are not interested in voice lessons. Students don't need to know anything about music to start playing! For students who are new to music, we will learn music theory using a ukulele music theory curriculum. Students who already know some about music or ukulele will work on learning new chords and skills as well as playing different songs and maybe even singing while playing! Why Ukulele? Ukulele is such a fun instrument!! If your student is younger and interested in guitar or found guitar too hard, ukulele is a great choice! It's smaller so less stretching of your fingers, it uses plastic strings so less finger pain, and has less strings so it's easier to memorize chords!! The other bonus is that it sounds good even when you play it wrong. The sound isn't harsh! Make sure to get a good quality ukulele. You can message Zoe Underhill for recommendations "General" Music Lessons : Ages 0+ This category can be customizable and covers multiple different focuses you can choose from. Options include: "General Music", Music History, Music Theory/Ear Training, Composition, and/or Music Appreciation. Music lessons are a great way to get the general music class experience but 1 on 1! For our tiniest musicians (Ages 0-2) we will focus on music exploration and discovery with their parent/guardian. Young students (Ages 3-7) can learn pitch identification, music theory, rhythms, and how to play fun instruments. We will do lots of movement, games, listening activities, singing, playing, and creating. This is a great first step for younger students who aren't ready for piano lessons yet or may not want to play the piano but aren't ready for voice lessons. This is also a great way to help your younger student gain pretty accurate pitch (or maybe even perfect pitch!) Older students (Ages 8+) will also enjoy these lessons but may choose to focus on music theory, instrument families/categories, music genres and famous pieces/works, composer(s), music reading, pitch identification/understanding, music history, and more! Music lessons are great for students who may not want to focus on a certain instrument but want more knowledge on music so they can read music or have a better appreciation for the music they hear and see. Learning how music works will prepare students for future music experiences.

  • Teaching Philosophy | Joyful Noise Studio

My Teaching Philosophy My teaching philosophy is to make meaningful connections and give a lifetime love of music to my students As a private piano and music teacher, I have really seen the importance of this philosophy and goal in just a year of teaching. When I was deciding to become a music teacher around 9th or 10th grade, my piano teacher at the time said something very important to me. I cannot remember exactly what she said, but it was something along the lines of “Most of your students will only take lessons for a year or two. Maybe longer. But most will not become concert pianists. My goal is to have fun and give them a positive experience with music that they will carry with them for the rest of their life. I want them to think back and have a good memory associated with piano lessons.” When she said that to me, I was a bit surprised. I had never thought about piano lessons this way before. The longer I thought about her words, the more that they made sense to me. And then in my senior year, I started teaching students who weren’t family members and I really saw what she meant. I have a lot of younger students. I began to realize the importance of making our lessons fun, colorful, and engaging. Music is so much more than notes on a page. It is a whole language of sounds and notes. Adapting your teaching to individual students As I have been teaching, I noticed a few things. Firstly: It is hard for young students to sit still. When I noticed this, I began adapting to them and what they needed. I have done everything from having them walk through a child-size “board game” answering questions or finding matching terms on paper plates spread throughout the room. Sometimes, if I am talking and they are having trouble paying attention, I will give them a fidget toy. That always helps. Secondly: They will not practice or do well at piano lessons if they are bored or struggling. I think we can all relate to this. It is hard for students who are younger to be motivated. Whenever I notice that they are bored or having trouble, I try to fix that as quickly as I can. Sometimes it is as simple as playing a music game or breaking down what they are learning into smaller chunks. I plan to use this skill in my own music classroom. I think teaching private lessons has really helped me know what to look for in students. Lastly: They just want to have fun. I feel the same way as a teacher! Why don’t we focus more on connection and fun in our teaching and classrooms? Why do we feel that being super strict and serious all the time will produce the musicians that we want? Do we really think they will stick with music if they feel like they are never good enough or if they are never having success? There are many other things I have learned and seen but those are just a few of the most important ones to me. The type of teacher I want to be I want to be the type of teacher whom my students love and feel comfortable being around. I want them to enjoy music class so much! I want it to be the thing they look forward to. I want to be able to give them the same amazing experience with music that I was so fortunate to have and be given. It does not matter who they are; everyone should have a chance to fall in love with music and learn how special it can be to them. I want to be the type of teacher that is happy to be there and radiates happiness to all of my students. I want to be the type of teacher that my students deserve; someone who will be fair but kind, honest but loving, and have expectations but expectations that they can achieve. What I want for my classroom community I want to have a positive classroom community where we all help each other and encourage each other as we learn music together. I think the best way to do that is to tell them about my expectations from day one, to be a good role model, and to play games and songs that encourage teamwork and team building. As musicians in a classroom, I think the importance of working together is so important and it is something they can carry with them and use throughout their life, not only when they are making music. In conclusion, music is important, and we need to make sure that our students are enrolled in music classes and activities. As a teacher, I want to make sure that I push my students to do their best while still making room for meaningful connections and a fun environment.
